AWARDS & HISTORY

1945: Born on March 5th, in Camden, Mississippi

1963: Migrated to Chicago and started his own band called The Maintainers

1964: Performed on Sunday's at Maxwell Street with Pat Rushing

1964: Played west side clubs like The Place, The Bow Tie, Club 312 and Lovers Lounge

1968: Left The Maintainers and fronted the soul and R&B group, The Brotherhood Band

1974: Replaced John Watkins in the house band at the famous Theresa's Lounge on the south side of Chicago where he played 7 nights a week for 7 years. His biggest inspirations were Muddy Waters' former sideman, Sammy Lawhorn, who taught him to play slide guitar and harmonica ace Junior Wells

1979: He joined Willie Dixon's Chicago Blues All-Stars and traveled to Mexico on tour, leaving the USA for the first time

1980: John's dream came true when he became the bandleader for Muddy Water's band until Muddy's death in 1983

1983: Until 1995 John joined Magic Slim & The Teardrops and began a solo career on Wolf Records

1986: 1st recording, Magic Slim & The Teardrops Chicago Blues Sessions Volume 3 on Wolf Records with Nate Applewhite. Recorded live at Wise Fools club in Chicago, IL

1987: WON! W.C. Handy Award for: Traditional Blues Album, Magic Slim & The Teardrops Chicago Blues Sessions Volume 3, Wolf Records. Recorded live at Wise Fools Night Club in Chicago by Hannes Folterbauer

1987: Recorded with James Cotton on his Take Me Back record on Blind Pig. The band members were: Sammy Lawhorn, Sam Lay, Bob Anderson and Pinetop Perkins

1990: Recorded the Gravel Road album with Magic Slim & The Teardrops, Blind Pig Records. Made the Billboard Charts and had great reviews

1990: WON! W.C. Handy Award for: Band of the Year with Magic Slim & The Teardrops

1991: WON! W.C. Handy Award for: Band of the Year with Magic Slim & The Teardrops

1991: Recorded Poor Man Blues CD, first solo recording on Wolf Records

1995: Released first solo recording on a major record label, The Real Deal CD, Atlantic/Code Blue Records, Produced by Mike Vernon, Recorded & Mixed by Michael Freeman

1995: John went out on his own and formed The Real Deal Blues Band

1997: Given the Theresa Needham Blues Award for outstanding service to the blues community by the Theresa Needham Blues Center
